Remembering Why We Prep...Flooding on the Farm

This is what is happening on my farm...I am still amazed at the speed of the rising waters and how quickly our acreage was underwater. The prepping I have done and shared about is and will always be for every possibility. My husband and I play what if games on anything and everything and the kids join in also. I know with our economic crisis and current administration that we, as preppers believe that our biggest prepping will be for whatever results from that. But I can tell you now with probable losses of fences, corrals- that we had wellingtons and plans of action for each family member. Our teens know what to do and listen the first time. We moved all the livestock several hundred yards, to the horsetrailer by wading through water that for me was nearly to my waist.

Prepping is for every situation. Once again I am reminded of the importance of the prepping we have done . So here is what I wrote for my farm blog a few minutes ago...it gives you a window of what has happened.

Flooding...
The farm is flooded due to a storm that hit this afternoon. At 12:35 a.m.(we just came inside from the final securing of animals) we have about 16" in the back and in some parts 18". All pens and corrals underwater...

The sheep and goats are in a borrowed horse trailer parked on the road down from us, as it is not flooded. In fact we parked our truck and car there too...

My farmhouse is muddy and ugh...

Rescued all wet kitties and are inside...wet kitties smell...

The new chicks are in a coop that has water to the floor and all are on perches...(50 birds)

The turkeys are on the perches in their pen and the pen is under water...(6 birds)

The other two flocks are in their pens and on perches...wet feathers...(50 birds)

Farmer, sons, daughter and wife soaked to the bone after four hours of finagling and securing our livelihood...

Garden, due to raised bed tire method is perfect and plants enjoyed the nourishing rain...

The good news to all readers is this...the property has been washed from one end to the other and all the debris has floated to the neighbor down the way. It was stacks of possibility materials that were waiting for some unknown job...

Oh and the neighbors north of us, just sent us their debris which I am certain we can salvage...you know one mans trash is another's treasure...

I am in awe each day as we continue to stay on message that WE the Double Nickel Farm family are not in control and therefore must always rely on Him.

Praying that the rains that are forecasted for the rest of the week are not flood worthy.

I thought of one more bit of good news- my laundry that is still on the clothesline has been washed once more- and we all know that laundry soap that has a fresh rain scent costs just a wee bit more!!!

Wow, glad you guys are safe and were well prepped. Our critics always ask what we are prepping for as they believe "it" will never happen to them, the government will always help, and America is immune to SHTF. Well, I got news for them, The government is always late to help, provides substandard service when they do, and SHTF happens all the time to different people and it looks like SHTF at your home and you were prepared for it, you survived it, and you will pull through with far less losses than those who do not prepare. And no doubt praying was the most important part of prepping.

God Bless

Matt- thank you, you are one uplifting man and I am so grateful!

AP- yes our prepping has pulled us through. Am I happy that the farm looks like a mudslide, no. But over over 100 animals and family and vehicles are fine. And do I expect any one to come and make sure we families out here in the boonies are fine...NOPE.

We must all continue to prep on.

Wow. Good for you for handling it so efficiently! Where are you located? (I haven't caught a newscast today and certainly not a local one. And it's even odds what the media here in Albuquerque will choose to cover.)

Here's hoping all your critters come through without as much as a ruffled feather or fur.

You can definitely know that If I were anywhere near New Mexico, I would certainly stop in to do what I could to help, as I'm sure most of us would. If there's any other way we can help let me know. I will be keeping you and your family in my prayers.

God Bless

idiotgrrl- we live around 15 miles south of Alamogordo and no we never make the news. Many low flying planes today-which I am sure were assessing the situation. All animals are fairing well thus far...we were quite worried about our turkeys as they dont handle stress too well.

AP-Prayers are all too important thing that I do not overlook. I will take your prayers in a heartbeat...our Escort ended up having water inside and we are airing it out. My husband was afraid he may not have moved it in time, but it is running well. So we are airing it out. I am driving it across the country in a week(to NY) to deliver it to my oldest son who is stationed there, so you can imagine how relieved we are that it is fine.
Thanks again AP for bringing prepping to the forefront of so may more folks...it will make all the difference

I often feel handicapped in my ability to help people due to my lack of college education, writing skills, and financially situation. So I use what I know to the best of my ability and that's the internet. I'm far from being a good prepping author, but I certainly can help deliver the messages that preppers like you and the others have to share with those who need the information.

AP- I never once have felt you are any less than an intelligent man with an incredible education- so your training was living and learning...much better than the piece of paper offered by most liberal universities.

You rock in my opinion and I pray to never read that you mention that you feel handicapped because you are not something. I am broker than broke--- my husband at 38 was permanently injured in an auto accident in the prime of his career...so what...just like this awful flood. We live and learn and take what we will need to make sure we can do better next time(although I am pretty content that ALL have survived, including breeding lines for next years herd. Praise God for sure.

Thanks AP

I think what it all comes down to is that we each have our strengths and weaknesses, we each have a gift to use and it's how we use it that matters...I remember reading in the bible something about using our gifts, didn't know what my gift was until a few months ago, and that's helping people to deliver the message of survival, preparedness and self-reliance to those who are unprepared.

Humble wife said...

AP- yes that is obvious about your gift and that you are using it. I am happy that you are doing what you are doing as I know it is making a difference to many.

APN said...

And your gift is definitely in your writings. I know many many people will benefit from your posts on Double Nickle farm as well as New Mexico Preppers Network, and the guest posts you've done on the Canadian Sites. Across all the prepper networks, I've estimated that we get approximately 5,000 hits per day. I feel confident that we are making a difference in peoples lives everyday by the information we get out to them. Thank you for all the work you do.

AP- funny just visiting the blogs today has been a relief for me. We have only a swamp cooler and with the humidity following the rains I am taking many breaks...as the swamp cooler doesnt work in this weather.

Thanks for giving me this chance. I suppose my writings are a gift...and 5000 hits a day woohoo!! I have been a bit remiss in the writings of late..first the flu...ugh and now this.

But--we all fill in when others lull which is why the prepper circuit is so great!

I'm not an A/C expert, but do you have access to ice? If you do, I wonder if a bucket of Ice in front of the swamp cooler will help...Of course as hot as it is, I don't know how viable that would be.

Humble wife said...

ice is in town 20 miles away...sigh. and yes it melts too fast. The good thing is that we rarely have humidity and the monsoon season will be over in about 2 weeks...so this will pass.

We do have fans and are all around them...brings the sweaty farm gang close together which is a good thing!
