A pre-Census taker just left my house. Her job is to let me know that they are coming. I had wet hair and tossed on clothes as I was just got out of the shower when the she knocked.
I told her my time was limited, and she quickly responded " oh no I am not asking questions" in a rush, like she expected me to he harsh. She then looked over to my fifth wheel, and said, so we' ll call that (my house number) A...
I told her no that is a fifth wheel, and no one lives in it, she nodded and continued writing...

Given the current climate with the government and their obvious increasing surveillance of, and prying into, everyone's business, I would be very careful of the census takers this year. Remember that most of the census will be conducted by the scumbags from ACORN. I would suggest everyone learn their rights with regards to answering census questions and don't allow them to get away with any intimidation. Congress, and therefore the census, is only chartered to enumerate the population and nothing more, which means all you have to do is tell them the number of adults and children in residence. Nothing else is their business. If you're unfortunate enough to receive the long form questionnaire or the American Family survey, don't fill it out. The Census Bureau doesn't need to know about your mortgage payments, the time you leave for work, or how many toilets (yes, toilets)you have in your house. No one has ever been prosecuted for not cooperating, only for giving false information. As an aside, I've never heard of a 'pre-Census' taker- are you sure that's what they actually were? Did you ask for ID? Why would the Census Bureau spent twice the time and money just to let you know someone was coming at a later time? Seems odd....
Yes I saw her neck badge and she gave me official forms in both English and Spanish reminding me that they will not identify anyone in my household. The form is D-31.
Well, it appears she was legitimate, but it still seems strange to pre-visit everyone, doesn't it? And the fifth-wheel thing is also a bit odd...Maybe I'm being paranoid, but what business is it of the government's if you have a travel trailer or not?
I am going to look up the laws regarding census taking, like ms. anonymous said, that is a good idea. It makes my blood boil HW. I'm getting very irritated with the massive amount of governmental intrusion. All the patriots should move to one huge county and have their own sherriff and city council. THAT would be awesome.
wow Humble wife...the whole situation seems very, very odd to me. as i live in canada i am not sure what the census practices are in the US...yikes! But maybe be a little extra vigilant and extra paranoid and keep an eye out for anyone coming around the farm in the next few weeks. Did she say when the "actual" census taker would be back?
as for me - i am with Joel the K! we really should all move to one county!
When I move it is to Texas folks. As to the census...My husband said we are putting the front gate up this weekend. It has been something we delayed because we live so far out...and our lane is so long. Well no more. As to access, we would have a sign to call us...and we will meet at the gate.
Joel---I agree so much...one place. And Anonymous is soooo correct we must BE INFORMED AND KNOW OUR RIGHTS...otherwise the government will push as far as possible.
I declined to participate in portions of the last census that were not called for in the constitution (number of bathrooms). After three increasingly pushy visits, they questioned my neighbors.
LOL - I just posted on this! Freaky! Put up no trespassing signs and all you have to answer is how many people - anon above is correct!! Do not answer anymore questions and do not let them in your house!!EVER.

I did not know that all was required was to give the number of people--having used past census information for family history, I thought they collected names and ages and other information (like where parents were born) on absolutely everyone. Of course, if I remember the rules, they don't release the census to the public until they are 100 years old, so the census info I have looked at was gathered long ago....
They already have your name and address and sundry other information that is part of the public record. Let them look it up if they want it. What they are chartered by the Constitution to do is enumerate the population, ie., make a head count, since property and other public records don't reflect household occupancy. Anything other than counting the sheep is unconstitutional, so make the shepards do some research if they want more info. Ignore their threats; they can't do anything to you. During the last census, my response to everything was "one adult". When the census taker threatened to call the police if I didn't cooperate, I opened and handed her my cell phone and said "Make the call. You're harassing me and I'll make sure I swear out a complaint when they arrive." She left, but her supervisor came by a couple of days later and tried the same crap. After I stonewalled him as well, I never heard from them again.
Well i would get that gate up asap and you do not have to tell them anything, nothing .get your stuff ready its comming....they are comming!!i should say......be extra carefull!!!!
Well that is very creepy. I did some checking on the web this am and really couldn't find anything about our rights except that under the constitution we are only required to answer our name and how many in live in the household. But everything else I checked said that not answering ANY of the questions could result in a fine of up to $100. So if any one else finds any more info I certainly would appreciate to know about it! I think it is beyond rediculous to answer questions about how many toilets I have or how long it takes to get to work not to mention that it is certainly not thier business to know how much I make or where I work. It is an unnecessary intrusion into my privacy! Yikes.
There hitting the rural areas of Oklahoma right now also. I told my friends in the rural areas to keep their gates locked.
Boy I am glad I read this post, I just got my census in the mail today. I too thought it was nosey. I will just fill out my name and how many in the household.
